This week our Hypnos mattress review is the Salcombe Superior.

The Hypnos Salcombe Superior mattress is another impressive mattress in our showroom. We have a double bed on a sprung firm edge base with a firm tension mattress display.

The mattress cover / sleep surface is responsibly sourced and chemical-free.The luxurious feel comes from responsibly sourced cotton that is naturally fire-resistant, so free of FR chemicals.

The Hypnos Salcombe Superior mattress is from the Origins Indulgence collection and is very similar to the Wool Origins 8 mattress. Our review is based on the firm tension mattress which we have in the showroom. When you sit on the mattress it is very supportive and the side keeps its shape very well. 3 rows of firmer spring down each side of the mattress, which Hypnos call Triple edge protection, provides greater support and enables the full width of the mattress to be used without a roll off effect. As the Salcombe Superior mattress is generally paired with an sprung firm edge divan base for a luxurious but supportive feel, additional edge support is provided by the timber edge on the base.

Lying on my back on the sprung firm edge divan I immediately feel the supportive nature of the mattress. I'm not lost in the upholstery, but there is plenty of it to make it really comfortable - 3kgs British wool, 3kgs Himalayan allo, kapok & cotton and 1.5kgs eOlus™ comfort layer. Like other Hypnos mattresses, the natural fillings help regulate body temperature and offer a clean and comfortable sleep environment. Rolling onto my side is effortless as I do not sink into the mattress, the surface holds it shape well and I can move around easily. As a 17 stone 6'5" side sleeper I find this position on this mattress extremely comfortable. Plenty of upholstery provides comfort to my shoulders and hips whilst the firmer spring provides excellent support. Although a firm tension mattress it is also very comfortable when lying on my stomach. When the mattress is placed on a platform top or wooden slatted base the mattress certainly feels firm as it doesn't benefit from the give in the springs in the base. My personal preference would be pairing the mattress with the sprung firm edge base.
