We all know that sleep is important to our health. Without the appropriate levels of sleep at night you’ll soon find that your body will start to shut down and you won’t be able to cope with a stressful job or look after the children as you’re so tired. Yet have you ever wondered just how much money your sleep is worth?

Well now you don’t have to work it out yourself as researchers at the University of Warwick have conducted research in order to add a monetary value to our nightly sleep. The research itself involved analysing the sleeping patterns of over 30,500 people in Britain over a four-year period. From this the scientists from the Department of Psychology at the university were able to akin the happy mood you get from a good night’s sleep to winning a staggering £120,000 on something like the lottery.

It was also found that a person, as they regularly got a good night’s sleep, over time had their score improved on the General Health Questionnaire. A test that is used across the country to monitor and measure the psychological well-being of an individual.

Just How Much Is Your Sleep Worth? In fact, the lead author – Dr Nicole Tang - of the research that was published in the Sleep Journal, is so impressed by the results of improved well-being seen in participants that she believes that improving sleep could be a simple and cheap way for the country to improve its health and wellbeing. Indeed, encouraging patients to improve their sleep should be a priority for health professionals across the UK. Yet this shouldn’t be an excuse for people to turn to sleeping pills as, overall, these got you more sleep yet didn’t raise a person’s wellbeing score.

“The current findings suggest that a positive change in sleep is linked to better physical and mental well-being further down the line,” said Dr Tang.

“It is refreshing to see the healing potential of sleep outside of clinical trial settings, as this goes to show that the benefits of better sleep are accessible to everyone and not reserved for those with extremely bad sleep requiring intensive treatments.

“An important next step is to look at the differences between those who demonstrate a positive and negative change in sleep over time, and identify what lifestyle factors and day-to-day activities are conducive to promoting sleep.”

Overall, the research did seem to suggest that a good night’s sleep is absolutely invaluable to our lives, but do you think it could raise the happiness of society as a whole? Well, yes! Every year the UK loses 200,000 working days to employees who are sick due to a lack of sleep. A fact that can have a serious impact on the economy of the country. In fact, it is estimated that a staggering £40 billion a year is lost from the British economy every year due to an unrested workforce in the UK.

Of course, the British economy isn’t likely to be top of our list of worries if we have difficulty sleeping. Yet there’s no denying that if a regular night’s sleep brings us the same joy as winning £120,000 then trying to improve our sleep should be top of our priorities.

So now you know the value you should place on a good night’s sleep. If you’re finding your bed too uncomfortable to get a proper sleep, you should seriously consider updating your mattress.
