Your bed is the focal point of your bedroom, which means that the type of bedding you pick for your bed is one of the first things people see when they enter the room.

Whether you want to be colourful and quirky or replicate the luxury you get in a 5-star hotel, bedding is an incredibly important part of your overall décor. So, before you go out and buy the first bedding you see on sale, consider these points first:

1: Your Bedding Showcases Your Style

John Atkinson BlanketJust like the clothes we wear on our bodies, the type of bedsheets that we choose can really give insight into the type of person you are.

When decorating a bedroom, we usually have a colour palette in mind, this could be bright colours, pastels or even all out whites. Whatever way you choose to decorate your room, your bedding should be an extension of this idea and needs to be considered thoughtfully. For instance, if you’re painting your walls a muted lilac to promote relaxation, putting bright orange sheets on your bed will totally clash with your walls. The key is to pick a palette and stick to it. So, if you have a lilac wall echo this with lilac sheets, white sheets or patterned sheets with a touch of lilac so as to not be too matched.

If you opt for a highly patterned wallpaper, you may want to choose a plainer sheet so the room doesn’t become too confusing for the eyes – especially if you want to sleep!

For kids, bedding is a fantastic way to decorate a room with their favourite cartoon characters without decorating a full room. This is particularly advantageous as kids can change their minds often and new bedding is much less costly than fully redecorating a room.  Of course, you don’t need to be a child to enjoy fun bedsheets, many shops are now selling far more fun bedsheets in double and king sizes now too so bedding never needs to be boring.

2: Material Is Important

The fabric that your bed sheets come in can greatly improve how well you sleep at night. Just think, when you stay in a luxury hotel, one of the greatest joys is slipping into bed against those amazing silky sheets. This is because these hotels use cotton sheets with a high thread count, and this is something you can easily replicate at home by investing in better quality sheets.

A high thread count and the use of Egyptian cotton in sheets usually means an expensive price tag, however, these are defiantly worth the money in sleep quality alone. Not only do they feel comfortable against the skin but a quality bed sheet will keep you warmer in winter and cooler in summer, so you get a better overall sleep. Plus, quality sheets will actually last you longer than lesser quality sheets which can get damaged and worn by regular high temperature washes.

3: Accessorise Wisely

Once you’ve decided on your sheet design and colour, the final decisions in your bedding is centred around your accessories.

Again, your accessories will play a big part in the overall feel of your room. If you want a minimalistic look in your bedroom, then you’re going to want less cushions and throws. However, a throw or blanket can be a simple and cost-effective way to add a burst of colour to your bedroom – as can a few extra cushions.

If you want a super cosy bedroom then you’ll want to add lots of cushions and a few throws. For super luxury add one of two king-sized throws to the end of your bed. Not only will this feel warmer, but it will also look your bedroom look bigger. Cushions are also perfect for adding extra touches of colour. For instance, you could add a touch of gold or silver for extra luxury and echo this is a bedside lamp.
