There are two kinds of people in the world – those who like to shower at night and those that like to shower in the morning. For the latter, the appeal is surely the fact a quick, cold shower in the morning is perfect or blowing away the cobwebs and getting you alert for the day. But what if there were actually more benefits to showering before bed, including a better night’s sleep? Here are just some of the benefits:

Night Shower1: A Better Night’s Sleep

When you got to sleep at night and how alert you feel are all linked to our body temperature. Just like a cold shower in the morning can wake you up and make you feel refreshed and ready for the day, a warm shower at night can help bring on sleep. This is similar to having a warm bath at night in order to relax yourself and get to sleep faster. A 20-minute warm shower around an hour and a half before you go to bed will have you drifting off to sleep much faster than a normal night without a shower.

2: Improved Skin

When we were teenagers we were told that we’d grow out of spots, yet decades later we can still suffer the odd breakout. However, this can also be prevented by a night shower. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that by washing our faces before bed (whether this be in a shower or just washing your face) we reduce the risk of things like breakouts, prevent ourselves getting wrinkles, improve how our night creams and moisturisers work and even reduce the risk of yourself getting an eye infection.

3: A Cleaner Bed

Just think, after a hard day’s work in the office or looking after the kids, you jump into bed covered in whatever germs and gunk you picked up during the day. This is then transferred on to your sheets that you sleep on both that night and the subsequent nights before laundry day. By having a shower, you get rid of all this grime before you get into bed, so both you and your sheets will feel clean and fresh for longer.

Even better, by having a shower before bed you’ll get rid of all that extra skin we shed over the day. This means that less of it will fall into our beds, which is definitely beneficial, as dust mites feed on this skin. The more dust mites you have, the more dust mite faeces will be in our beds – it’s this that causes irritation in our skin and causes us to lose sleep from itching. It can also worsen the effects of asthma too.

4: Better Morning Routine

Of course, many of us will miss that cold morning shower that gets us raring to go, but this can be easily be replicated with splashing cold water over our face first thing. Even better, a large coffee will be enough to get you raring to go through the day. The real benefit to showering the night before is all the extra time you’ll save during the morning. That extra 20 minutes can be spent browsing the internet, making yourself a healthy lunch or even just spend the extra time asleep in your bed!
