Every time we have a big event coming up there is one thing we all try to do – catch up on our beauty sleep in order to look our best! But does our sleep, or lack of, really affect how attractive we are? Well, surprisingly, getting a good night’s sleep can indeed improve your beauty as long as you regularly get your recommended 6-8 hours a night. Don’t believe us? Here are 6 ways your sleep can improve your beauty:

1 – Fewer Wrinkles

When you sleep your skin produces collagen, a protein which repairs your skin making it plumper and less likely to wrinkle. In fact, people who only get 5 hours of sleep a night can actually develop twice as many fine lines and wrinkles than people who sleep 7 hours a night. A lack of sleep will also dry your skin out, meaning any wrinkles you have will appear more prominent.

Male-Beauty-Sleep2 – Eyes Are Less Puffy

We’ve all woken up after a night out with black circles under our eyes or even big bags that no amount of cucumber slices will fix. Puffy eyes are the first sign of a poor night’s sleep, and can be hard to hide. Dark circles under the eyes occur due to blood not flowing well in the body – a symptom of a lack of sleep. The blood collects under the eyes and becomes visible due to the thin skin there.

Getting more sleep at night, keeping well hydrated and adding an extra pillow under your head will help to reduce eye puffiness.

3 – Fuller Looking Hair

Black circles under the eyes isn’t the only downfall to poor blood flow in the body. A lack of sleep can mean that your hair follicles don’t get enough nutrients, minerals and vitamins from your blood, which means that your hair will stop growing and become weak.

A lack of sleep can also make you stressed. When your body is stressed it releases the hormone cortisol that can also cause you to lose hair. Better sleep means your hair will become fuller, less fragile and shinier.

4 – Glowing Complexion

Your lack of sleep and subsequent lack of blood flow to the face means your complexion will suffer too. Forget rosy cheeks, your skin will look dull, grey and lifeless meaning you look unhealthy and tired.

5 – Looking Happier

A lack of sleep can make you look sad as it causes the corners of your mouth to droop making you look less happy than you actually are. Being tired can also make you frown more – these subtle facial changes can really change how you look to others and it’s usually the reason why people ask if you’re tired.

6 – Beauty Products Work Better

There are lots of miracle cures on the market to eradicate wrinkles, dry skin and poor complexion – but these beauty products won’t work properly if you don’t get enough sleep. When you are awake your skin is focused on protecting your skin from pollutants and the sun. At night, while you sleep, you skin can take the time to repair itself and you get a more consistent blood flow to the face. This better blood flow allows your skin to benefit more from the repairing qualities in beauty products.
