As a nation our sleeping patterns are getting worse and many people put this down to modern technology. We're a generation that loves social media, mobile phones and watching TV shows at our own convenience. This means there's so much that can distract us from a good night's sleep and this really affects the way that we're able to unwind and rest.

However, just because technology can affect the way that we sleep, doesn’t mean that we can't use it to our advantage too. There have been advancements in sleep technology too, which we should use to help monitor our sleep and ensure we get the best possible night's rest.

Apps to Help You Sleep

Rather than just have your mobile phone to the side of the bed to check emails and messages throughout the night, use it to your advantage. There are lots different apps that you can download that can help with insomnia. Many of the best ones are completely free.  They act as an "environment enhancer" and are designed to help you create the perfect ambient atmosphere to relax in.

For example you could download The Ambience or Sleep. Both of these play sounds and soothing voices to help people drift off to sleep much more easily. The Count Sheep is there for people who find that counting and concentrating on numbers helps them to sleep better. There’s a variety of apps out there that you can take advantage and help you sleep better. If one of these doesn’t work as effectively as you would like then don't be afraid to try something different. There will be something that works for you.

Monitor Your Sleep Patterns

If you're not sleeping well, or you're waking up feeling unrested then you need to make sure that you take control and find out what is happening. Rather than just sleeping badly you should try to see what is causing you to be so restless. Once you know what the problem is you're much more likely to be able to fix it and sleep better.

As you might expect there are a number of apps that can help with this. One of the most recommended is Beddit. This connects to a sensor that is under your sheet. It allows you to see how long it took you to fall asleep and how often you woke during the night. You can measure your heart rate and breathing frequency. This app gives you a good indication of what’s disturbing your sleep so that you can fix it.

The Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock app is one of the iPhone’s favourite sleep apps. It analyzes and graphs your sleep quality, allows you add sleep notes, and wakes you up at your lightest sleep time using soothing tones.

Of course on top of this you need to make sure that you have a comfortable bed and mattress, which will aid sleeping well. However, these apps and advances in modern technology can help too!
